ABOUT ARAGON
Huesca is a province on the landlocked Aragón region of Spain. This area, along with Navarre, forms the northeastern quadrant of Spain. Located on the southern central side of the Pyrenees, it is an ancient land composed of three provinces: Zaragoza, remote Teruel which is farther south, and Huesca in the north toward the Pyrenees. These are also the names of the provinces' three major cities.

Aragón is one of the most history-rich regions of the country. It is known best for two former residents: Catherine of Aragón, who foolishly married Henry VIII of England, and Catherine's father, Ferdinand of Aragón, whose marriage to Isabella, queen of Castile and León in the 15th century, led to the unification of Spain.
One of its main attractions is its mountainous Pyrenean area, which is ideal for skiing in winter and is home to resorts such as Candanchú and Formigal. It is also perfect for adventure sports in spring and autumn. The province of Huesca also has a range of other outstanding natural attractions such as the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The province also boasts an important cultural heritage, with numerous examples of Romanesque art as well as architectural treasures to be found in towns such as Jaca, Barbastro, San Juan de la Peña, Montañana and the historic quarter of the capital, Huesca. This area is also part of the Way of Saint James pilgrims' route, awarded the World Heritage designation by UNESCO. Aragón also prides itself on its exceptional Mudéjar architecture and on its bullfighting tradition. This region is also known for the jota, a bounding, leaping dance performed by men and women since at least the 1700s.
Outstanding features of the local gastronomy are the wines found on the Somontano Wine Route, and dishes such as chicken in "chilindrón" sauce (made with tomatoes and peppers), and "farinetas"(a kind of porridge).Aragón's capital, Zaragoza, is the most visited destination in the region because it lies on the main route between Madrid and Barcelona. If you're driving from Madrid to Barcelona (or vice versa), make a detour to Zaragoza.
